Growing faster than ever, the city of Brisbane's public transportation system welcomes new travellers daily. In this project, as the team's researcher and UX designer, I conducted user research to develop a tool that assists travellers navigating public transportation.

DURATION

My study with Translink users new to Brisbane identified that the system is overwhelming as there are few specialized tools for navigation. With ridership up 20% as a result of fifty-cent fare implementation and population growth, Queensland Translink's navigational tools need to adapt to accommodate new travellers and a growing public transport system.

Queensland Translink users need better tools for navigation as the public transport system expands.

THE PROBLEM

Reduce confusion and overwhelm by providing users with an accessible tool for navigating on public transportation in Brisbane.

OBJECTIVE

To give users the information they need, where they need it, we developed prototypes for interactive installations that provide live data and plan personalized routes.

Interactive installations located at busways.

THE SOLUTION

With ten participants, all international university students new to Brisbane, I conducted a workshop involving an interview portion and verbal walkthroughs in which I joined them on a public transportation journey. I designed this workshop to gain insight into participants' experiences, thought processes, and needs.

In-depth workshop with activities to understand users' experiences using Translink in Brisbane.

INTERVIEW

VERBAL WALKTHROUGH

A three-part interview about participants' experiences with public transportation in their home city, in Brisbane, digital navigation tools.

Participants feel overwhelmed adjusting to life in a new city.

Participants feel anxious when presented with disorganized and excessive information.

Users need the information that matters to them in an organized manner.

Accessible information may reduce overwhelm for those adjusting to a new place.

Information about the public transport system and navigation tools need to be easily accessible.

Participants are confused due to lack of knowledge about the city and its public transport system.

I accompanied each participant on a bus journey through the city. They verbally walked me through their process of getting from point A to B.

Through this project, I learned the value of working closely with users and having them actively participate in the design process. An online survey would not have yielded the same results or a thorough understanding of my target group. I most enjoyed having meaningful conversations with the workshop participants.

Designing with users rather than designing for users.

A clean, simple interface that only displays what users want to know.

An interactive system with general and live information to aid navigation.

Tools should be located at bus stops and train stations.
